Kicking the next 12 months off in vibrant style, Pantone’s new Colour of the Year is 18-750 ‘Viva Magenta’.
Each year, the international colour powerhouse concocts a new hue that will dominate the interior and exterior styling of homes and gardens around the world. This year, the exuberant colour drew inspiration from nature and is “inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.” In other words, Viva Magenta is a statement shade that reconnects us to the forces of the natural world, making it the perfect colour palette to embrace in your next garden or landscaping design.
Viva Magenta appears in a wide variety of plant foliage and flowers. Think about placing the audacious colour where it can be easily accessed, such as in entryways and along garden paths to galvanise our spirit, making us feel joyful and help us to build our inner strength.

Ground Covers
- Alternanthera Little Ruby™ – the perfect mounding ground cover with a compact, spreading habit and deep burgundy foliage that makes it a stand out plant. Also looks terrific as a border, or in pots and containers.
- Celosia Dracula – The unusual shape and eye-catching colour of this plume-shaped flower is great for adding drama and interest to landscapes. Planting this variety in the sun will result in darker almost purple-toned foliage and darker purple flower than if grown in the shade.
- Hypoestes Splash Red – this attractive, low maintenance plant features beautifully marked foliage in shades of red with deep green markings. Performs best in part shade, therefore suits protected areas of the garden or well-lit areas indoors such as sunrooms.
Shrubs
- Anigozanthos Bush Pizzazz (PBR) – produces opulent, deep magenta flowers that provide brilliant colour and contrast in gardens or landscapes. Known for its excellent flowering performance, compact height and improved disease tolerance compared to other varieties.
