We’re passionate about greening our urban communities and restoring our native habitats. Since 1963, Benara has established itself as plant specialists in a myriad of horticultural fields – including the production of advanced or semi-mature trees. Today, Benara is third-generation owned and operated and combined, these owners have over 200 years of experience in producing trees for the horticultural industry.
With one of the widest ranges of any grower in the country, Benara Nurseries are NIASA accredited, an approved WALGA Supplier and have been contract growing native and exotic trees for over 50 years to supply a wide variety of end users including Shires and city Councils, landscapers, architects, property developers, contractors, mining companies, and revegetation and forestry specialists.
A significant component of Benara’s 520 acres is devoted to the production of premium quality trees that conform to the Australian Standard AS 2303:2018 ‘Tree Stock for Landscape Use’. This not only complies with growing demand from Shires and Councils across Western Australia, it also ensures our trees will survive in the landscape when planted to meet tree canopy cover targets.
“The best time to plant a tree was 25 years ago. The second-best time to plant a tree is today.” ― Eliud Kipchoge
Benara Nurseries have long been advocates for the greening of our State and we believe the value of a single tree cannot be overstated.
Advanced sized trees and plants go a long way beyond providing aesthetic appeal to your property or a local park. Ecologists who study forest restoration have done well to educate the wider public on how important trees are in environmental sustainability, helping to store carbon and clean the air, provide habitat for native fauna and other vegetation, stabilise soils and prevent erosion, reduce the chance of inundation in previously flood-prone areas, and create or increase shade.
In fact, their canopy cover is vital to combat the heat island effect, or ‘heat sinks’, in our urban environments and will make the difference in increased liveability to Perth suburbs for future generations. Urban forestry can provide physiological, sociological and economic benefits to the wider community; therefore, planting trees is both a commitment and a lifelong investment in a better world for all.
Furthermore, our native forests are home to some of the most unique wildlife and plants that can be found on Earth. Protecting this biodiversity is vital.
“If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed; if in terms of ten years, plant trees; if in terms of 100 years, teach the people.” ― Confucius
To produce premium trees that could help to save our future, Benara adopts best practice management and guidelines that begin at ground level during the earliest stage of production.
All possible quality control measures are undertaken to get your new tree off to a healthy start, ensuring the final product is strong and self-supporting with healthy root development. This includes utilising seed tissue culture or cuttings from accredited suppliers, propagating at specific times of year, operating an intensive integrated pest management system, correct pruning, growing the tree from one pot size to another to ensure proper root development, and regular tree inspections and reports.
This carefully considered process takes time and devotion from our hard-working team. To learn more about how long it takes to grow our trees, including how far in advance you should choose a species, click here to read our other blog.
